`Aikahi STAR Reader Program
At the beginning of each school year, students in grades 2-6 will be invited to participate in our ‘Aikahi STAR Reader program. This program utilizes the technology and research conducted by Renaissance Learning to individualize reading practice for each student through the three types of quizzes: reading practice, vocabulary practice, and literacy skills quizzes. The data from the STAR Reading assessment is used to begin this individualized reading program. Students will be taking the STAR Reading assessment 5 times during the school year to monitor their reading progress and success.
How the ‘Aikahi STAR Reader Program Works:
- Students take the STAR Reading assessment to find out their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) from which they should be
selecting books to read. - Find an AR book of interest according to their ZPD either through the school’s library online catalog (OPAC) found on
aikahi.net or through arbookfind.com. - Students read at home for 20 minutes each night. (Either independent reading, reading with another person, or having the
book read to them.) - Upon completion of the book, students take the AR test on the computer at school.
- After taking the test, a TOPS report (The Opportunity to Praise Students) is printed to show their progress and the number of
points earned for that particular book. - The points are used for our ‘Aikahi STAR Reader program to recognize students for their reading success during each
quarter. There are 3 levels (red, white, and blue) students can work towards. Students are recognized by putting their picture
on the bulletin board in the cafeteria, standing at school assemblies, receiving a colored ribbon to tie onto their school ID,
and quarterly celebrations. - Points are reset each quarter.
