AINA IS - February Update
The Garden Party held on February 13 was a huge success, with close to 40 volunteers giving their time. The garden beds were prepped for planting and we harvested our first batch of compost for our bins, all of which was put into the beds. We also constructed another flower bed on the playground!
The Garden Team donated a Pesto dinner with salad to the Parent's Night Out fund raiser. A former Aikahi parent, who assisted in the construction of our gardens four years ago, purchased the meal for $60 during the live auction. Kids made the pesto on Monday after school and we had a pesto tasting party!
We will harvest lettuce next week and donate it to the cafeteria for use on Thursday's lunch. And look at the gardens near A building: the pineapple is bearing fruit and there is also a head of broccoli! The Sweet Potatoes will be ready to harvest in March.
Garden lessons are complete for grades K,1 & 5 and all our beds have been planted!
The Kindergarten classes planted a "Tops and Bottom" garden with beans, lettuce and carrots. We learned about which part of the vegetable plant we eat... or not: root, stem, leaf, flower, seed. Ask your kids about it!
Grade 1 planted a "Good Buddy Garden" and talked about how plants help each other. Basil helps the tomatoes by warding off bugs with its strong aroma. Beans give nutrients back to the soil for the carrots to use. Flowers attract the pollinators.
Grade 5 planted a "Three Sisters Garden" of Corn, Pole Beans and Squash and discussed how the Pilgrims learned these planting methods from the Native Americans
