AINA IS - January Update
Now that school is back in session, the Garden Club is back in action! During our first
meeting of the year, we harvested carrots and green beans, which were planted late last year. We also have the addition of the boardwalk from our old playground! It is sitting next to the beds near kindergarten and we use it as a gathering place during our activities. It also is used as a table or serving area for our fresh garden treats! We send our thanks to Bill Pearce for bringing it over to our gardens...we suspect it was a very big job!
We are pleasantly surprised that Eva and Malia Goodwin have returned to Aikahi! Last year, they, along with their parents Steve and Jodi, were very involved with our gardens. Our Aikahi family welcomes the Goodwin family back!
Now that the weather has cooled off a bit, our plants are growing well. Thus, we have planned more cooking lessons with our parent volunteer Jennifer Robinson. January will be cucumber dill soup (recipe provided by Michelle Obama last year), February will be Pesto and March will be Okinawan Sweet Potatoes. We will be harvesting our first batch of compost that has been brewing out there for about 3 months. We are finally recycling some of the yard waste from our school campus!
Upcoming activities for 'Aina include:
1) The Garden Party will be on a future date….stay tuned! Be prepared to bring your kids along with your shovels, metal rakes and wheel barrows. We will prep the gardens and clean up our school a bit.
2) Classroom lessons will resume February 1 & 2 for grades K, 1, and 5. The Garden Party will ensure the garden beds are ready for more planting.
Happy Gardening!
