AINA IS - December Update
The Aina IS lessons for grade K, 1 & 5 have been completed. Kindergarten viewed their flowers under magnifying glasses, reviewed their butterfly habitats, and drew pictures of pollinators. Grade 1 practiced measuring their plants in the gardens and reviewed the life cycle of various plants. Ask you child if their sunflower predictions were correct? Grade 5 completed their carrot experiment. Our results were varied, most likely due to the number of seeds planted or the number that actually sprouted. Ask you child if carrots grow larger if given more space!
Garden Club had their first cooking event with the help of Jennifer Robinson. We sauteed Choi Sum, Mizuna, Eggplant and Green Onion from our gardens along with various season sqaush. Thank you again Jennifer for your help!
Our 2nd and 6th graders learned about the protective benefits of fruits and vegetables by exploring edible plant parts. They had the opportunity of trying protective foods familiar to them as sampled in a “bird’s nest” comprised of cabbage leaf with shredded carrots as nest material and grapes as “eggs”. They also learned the relationship between our resources, the food we eat and the environment. The 6th graders also learned the importance of a balanced, high quality , good breakfast. Many thanks to Lisa Kreitzer, Valesia Seltmann, Lynn Isaacson, Debbie Schatz, Kelly Perry and Koky and Joshua Jacobs. The 2nd and 6th grade classes, who all participate in the "AIna Is' Nutrition program thank the Kokua Hawaii Foundation for gifting each student a cool recyclable water container. Please go to Kokua Hawaii Foundation to see great ways to be environmentally friendly as Environmental Stewards, and conserve our natural resources.
We will be removing the old plants from all the beds after school on Jan 11. I encourage ALL kids to come out to help. The exact date of the Garden Party is still being worked on. The next set of garden lessons begins Feb 1.
